INTELLECT MIND OVER MATTER - Adler, Mortimer J. Review & Synopsis

 Synopsis

The author examines the nature of the human intellect, its link to artificial and alien intelligence, the role of language in terms of mind and meaning, and the uses and abuses of intellect

Review

Mortimer J. Adler is Chairman of the Board of the Encyclopaedia Britannica, Director of the Institute for Philosophical Research, and Honorary Trustee of the Aspen Institute. He has authored fifty books. He lives in Chicago. In this provocative essay Adler ( A Guidebook to Learning , etc.), chairman of the editorial board of the Encyclopedia Britannica , among other distinguished positions, considers intellect as the quality separating humans from animals, who possess cognitive perception. Arguing a case for mind over matter, he cites intellect as the agent responsible for uniquely creative activity. Discussing "Virtue and Vice" he warns against neglecting and/or misusing the intellect and urges the attainment of intellectual virtues such as prudence and strength of character as prerequisites to acquiring "good intellectual habits." The liberal arts, he stresses, "should be in everyone's habitual possession"; according to Adler, it is not possible today for anyone to be a specialist in all fields.

God and Man in the Law

In a wide-ranging study based on legal history, political theory, and philosophical ideas going all the way back to Plato and Roman law, Robert Clinton challenges current faith in an activist judiciary. Claiming that a human-centered Constitution leads to government by reductive moral theory and illegitimate judicial review, he advocates a return to traditional jurisprudence and a God-centered Constitution grounded in English common law and its precedents.

Nerve Endings of the Soul

It is a common belief that personal communion from the Holy Spirit to mankind ceased at the closure of the canon of scripture. The information presented in this book shows that interaction between the Holy Spirit and the mind of man enabled by the human spirit is bidirectional and continues in our time. Evidence presented from theological and scientific resources confirms the duality of the immaterial mind and the physical brain of man and substantiates the personal interaction between the Holy Spirit and the mind of human beings. The model for study is the neural synaptic network, incorporating the microsite hypothesis of Sir John C. Eccles. Dualist interaction has been substantiated by contemporary theologians and investigators in the neurosciences and information theory, building on advances in quantum wave theory. A hypothesis is offered by this author for a mechanism for dualist interaction involving probabilistic quantum tunneling across synaptic clefts. Transmission of specified information with meaning and purpose occurs within neural codes in spike trains of action potentials in synaptic networks. Through a lifetime of learning archived in memory, the mind of humans interprets neural codes enabled by the unique capacity for language. Communication from the Holy Spirit, as sender, to human minds, as recipients, draws upon current understandings of information and communication theory. The trigger for initiating spike trains as codes is postulated as an immaterial energy source by which the Holy Spirit communicates with the mind of man. Evidence presented in this book provides a compelling rationale for the reality of bidirectional communication with the living, personal Holy Spirit in our time. That Jesus Christ indwells those who accept his truth as a personal, living spirit is confirmation of the promise in John 14:1521. Interaction with God by his atoning grace through Jesus Christ by the power of the Holy Spirit gives receptive mankind comfort and counsel today to his glory.

Alphatopbetics: Volume One:: Ideas We Live with and Live by Every Day of Our Life

Alphatopbetics: Ideas We Live With and Live by Every Day of Our Life is a book inspired by the study of psychology, theology, history, science, and especially philosophy. Influenced by the Greek philosophers Socrates, Plato, and Aristotle, Jerry Dampier has combined life experience and informal discussions to arrive at the basis of Alphatopbetics. “The ideas written about in this book are not just research based, although I have done extensive research over four or five years, the ideas I have written about are ideas in which I have had many conversations; the discussions or conversations were held with family and relatives, friends and acquaintances, academicians or college professors and classmates. They, along with the research I have put into this book, have helped me to write it.”

The force and clarity of the intellect's role in how we think is made quite lucid by one of Aristotle's most learned students, Mortimer J . Adler , in his book entitled Intellect : Mind over Matter . As I understand it, with the unique ..."

Artificial Intelligence with Common Lisp

[The book] provides a balanced survey of the fundamentals of artificial intelligence, emphasizing the relationship between symbolic and numeric processing. The text is structured around an innovative, interactive combination of LISP programming and AI; it uses the constructs of the programming language to help readers understand the array of artificial intelligence concepts presented. After an overview of the field of artificial intelligence, the text presents the fundamentals of LISP, explaining the language's features in more detail than any other AI text. Common Lisp is then used consistently, in both programming exercises and plentiful examples of actual AI code.- Back cover This text is intended to provide an introduction to both AI and LISp for those having a background in computer science and mathematics. -Pref.

How to Think Like Aquinas

About St. Thomas Aquinas, Pope John XXII said: “A man can derive more profit in a year from his books than from pondering all his life the teaching of others.” And Pope Pius XI added: “We now say to all who are desirous of the truth: ‘Go to St. Thomas.’ ” But when we do go to Thomas – when we open his massive Summa Theologica or another of his works – we’re quickly overwhelmed, even lost. If we find him hard to read, how can we even begin to “think like Aquinas?” Now comes Kevin Vost — the best-selling author of The One-Minute Aquinas — armed with a recently rediscovered letter St. Thomas himself wrote – a brief letter to young novice monk giving practical, sage advice about how to study, how to think, and even how to live. In this letter written almost 800 years ago, St. Thomas reveals his unique powers of intellect and will, and explains how anyone can fathom and explain even the loftiest truths. Vost and St. Thomas will teach you how to dissect logical fallacies, heresies, and half-truths that continue to pollute our world with muddy thinking. Best of all, you’ll find a fully-illustrated set of exercises to improve your intellectual powers of memory, understanding, logical reasoning, shrewdness, foresight, circumspection, and practical wisdom. You’ll also learn: The four steps to training your memoryHow to know your mental powers – and their limitsWhy critical thinking alone is insufficient for reaching the truthTwenty common fallacies – and how to spot themThe key to effectively reading any bookHow to set your intellect free by avoiding worldly entanglementsHow to commit key truths to memory Pius XI called St. Thomas Aquinas the “model” for those who want to “pursue their studies to the best advantage and with the greatest profit to themselves.” Leo XIII urged us all to “follow the example of St. Thomas.” Over the centuries, dozens of other popes have praised him. Surely it is time to listen to these good men, time to “go to Thomas,” to learn to think like him, and, yes, even to live like him.

Another good and easy read on the subject is Mortimer J . Adler's Intellect : Mind Over Matter .103 Finally, a more challenging but worthwhile book, hot off the presses in 2017, is Dr. Peter Redpath's aforementioned Moral Psychology of ..."

The Boundless Love of God

The Boundless Love of God: A Holy Spirit Story E. Stan Lennard, M.D., Sc.D. Christianity is evidence based, and this book innovatively shows concordance between Scriptural narratives and applications from the neurosciences that speak to personal interaction between the Holy Spirit and the human spirit and soul through the synaptic networks of the brain. Direct and personal communion with the Holy Spirit is restored when one accepts the New Covenant of the Gospel in repentance. It was given by the grace and boundless love of God for Man through the redemptive sacrifice of Jesus Christ. This book tells the story of the redemption of fallen mankind by the work and power of the Holy Spirit. It is a common belief in the Church that personal, direct communion from the Holy Spirit to mankind ceased at the closure of the Canon of Scripture. The information presented in this book shows that interaction between the Holy Spirit and the mind of man enabled by the human spirit is bidirectional and continues in our time. Evidence is presented from theological and scientific resources that confirms dualist interaction between the immaterial mind and the physical brain of man. It further substantiates personal, direct interaction between the Holy Spirit and the mind of human beings. The model for study used in this book is the neural synaptic network and incorporates the microsite hypothesis of Nobel laureate Sir John C. Eccles. Dualist interaction proposed by Eccles has been increasingly substantiated by contemporary theologians and investigators in the neurosciences and information theory, building on advances in quantum wave theory. The author addresses the mechanism for dualist interaction involving probabilistic quantum tunneling across synaptic clefts. Specified information with meaning and purpose actualized within neural codes is transmitted within spike trains of action potentials distributed through synaptic networks. The trigger for initiating spike trains is postulated as an immaterial energy source by which the Holy Spirit communicates with the mind of man. Through a lifetime of learning archived in memory, the cognitive mind of humans interprets neural codes enabled by their unique capacity for language. Communication from the Holy Spirit or other human minds as senders to human minds as recipients draws upon current understandings of information theory. Evidence presented in this book provides a compelling rationale for the reality of bidirectional communion with the living, personal Holy Spirit in our time. That Jesus Christ indwells those who accept his truth as a personal, living Spirit is confirmation of the promise in John 14:15–21. Interaction with God by his atoning grace through Jesus Christ by the power of the Holy Spirit gives receptive mankind hope and counsel today and into eternity to His glory.

Out of Chaos

Excerpt from Foreword, written by Stuart Ross Taylor:"Are we really the pinnacle of 4500 million years of evolution? Closely related to the aggressive chimpanzees, have we evolved enough to cope? The nightly news on television, that mervelous technical invention of scientists, no turned into a field too barren to be termed a wastelad, provides little hope that Homo sapiens is more than another of nature's failed experiments... "Will a more evolved species evolve in time? Wayne notes the extraordinary achievements of the Ashkenazi Jews, separated in European ghettos for centuries, whose descendants, now three percent of the US population, have gernered 27% of the Nobel Prizes awarded to that country. In their enforced isolation, restricted to intellectually demanding occupations, did they evolve superior brains? Perhaps there are grounds for hope before the unrestricted growth in population; the elephant in the attic falls through the ceiling. Read this book. It tells us where we are, how we got there, and how we might escape disaster."

Integrated Education and Learning

Integrated Education and Learning aims to discuss novel approaches to offer integrated educational methods. Within the last few years, educational techniques have evolved to favour critical thinking and improve learning skills. This volume links thinking and learning in educational settings and discusses diverse mechanisms that influence this association; including meta-cognitive capacity, memory, cognitive style, conceptual approaches, digitalization, teaching approaches, echoing, and questioning. It embraces this discussion at all levels, from early childhood education to higher education. This book also includes teaching tips for creating a learning environment that cultivates students’ creativity and critical thinking on both online platforms and live-in-classroom. The book follows discussing the merits of an integrated educational paradigm that will help develop highly intellectual thinkers and will promote modern values to face current and future challenges. Finally, the book shows a balance between learning and education to enhance creativity, critical thinking and social skills.

The tension between the dis- puted rational and empirical basis of thinking has been captured with clarity in the book by Mortimer J . Adler entitled Intellect : Mind Over Matter . Adler offers a philosophical description of human ..."

Evil Reigns

There are 7.5 billion people alive today; millions more have lived, all having experienced the phenomena of mind and consciousness. The Library of Congress contains more than thirty-two million books, of which thousands are about the human mind. Because of the nature of language, no consensus has been reached as to what mind is and how it is related to the brain. In the last few hundred years, evil elements of the human mind have become dominant. An evolutionary development is unfolding as we live. We are an integral part of it. For all of mankind, it has both promise and great danger. This book offers a simple, clear, and functional conception of the human mind. It explains why human beings have become the most amazing creatures, performing miracles with material, and yet the most dishonest and cruel animal that ever lived. We have eaten heavily from the tree of knowledge of good and evil. Now we threaten the very lives of all that live upon the Earth.

A Critique of William Lane Craig's In Quest of the Historical Adam

For many, Dr. William Lane Craig is considered to be a Christian scholar’s scholar. Even attempting to list the books, articles, debates, lectures, etc. would not do justice to his importance for Christian apologetics, theology, and philosophy. He has defended the historic Christian faith against countless attacks and has demonstrated that Christian thinkers are a force that cannot be brushed aside or ignored. His latest book, In Quest for the Historical Adam, is generating as much if not more attention than any of his previous publications. This text is controversial, but the controversy is not primarily from those outside the faith. His claims penetrate to the foundations of classical orthodox theology, and many Christians are alarmed at his conclusions. He has set out on a quest to discover, by philosophical argument, analysis of the biblical text, appeal to contemporary evolutionary theory, and arguments from an array of disciplines, whether the Adam depicted in Genesis was an actual historical person. Following the structure of his book, this essay is a critical evaluation of his arguments and conclusions about the historical Adam.

How to Think About God

Dr. Adler extends and modernizes the argument for the existence of God developed by Aristotle and Aquinas without relying on faith, mysticism, or science. Instead, he uses a rationalist argument to lead the reader to a point where he or she can see that the existence of God is not necessarily dependent upon a suspension of disbelief. Truth in Religion

Only if, with regard to the diversity of religions, there are questions about truth and falsehood do we have a problem about the pluralism of religions and the unity of truth. That problem is not concerned with preserving religious liberty, freedom of worship, and the toleration, in a particular society or in the world, of a diversity of religious institutions, communities, practices, and beliefs. It is concerned only with the question of where, in that diversity, the truth lies if there is any truth in religion at all.

A Summary of Philosophy

This compact collection of philosophical texts from the Summa Theologica--on God, creation, the soul, human acts, moral good and evil, love, habits, virtue, and law--is presented newly translated in abridged form and cast in a modified version of the medieval quaestio. Included are only the most important objections and Aquinas’ replies; appeals to scriptural, theological, and philosophical authorities have been omitted. Unlike the ordering of the originals, questions and answers are here presented prior to objections and replies; the result is a sharp, rich, topically organized question-answer presentation of Aquinas' major philosophical arguments within a brief compass. A general Introduction, headnotes, a glossary, an index, and a select bibliography offer expert guidance to the work of this major philosopher.

Aristotle for Everybody

Adler instructs the world in the "uncommon common sense" of Aristotelian logic, presenting Aristotle's understandings in a current, delightfully lucid way. Aristotle (384 - 322 B.C.) taught logic to Alexander the Great and, by virtue of his philosophical works, to every philosopher since, from Marcus Aurelius, to Thomas Aquinas, to Mortimer J. Adler. Now Adler instructs the world in the "uncommon common sense" of Aristotelian logic, presenting Aristotle's understandings in a current, delightfully lucid way. He brings Aristotle's work to an everyday level. By encouraging readers to think philosophically, Adler offers us a unique path to personal insights and understanding of intangibles, such as the difference between wants and needs, the proper way to pursue happiness, and the right plan for a good life.

Lingua Latina per se Illustrata, Pars I: Familia Romana (Latin Edition) - rberg, Hans H. Review & Synopsis

Synopsis Hans rberg's Lingua Latina per se Illustrata is the world's premiere series for learning Latin via the Natural Method. The Natural Method encourages students to learn Latin without resorting to translation, but instead by teaching them to think in the language: students first learn grammar and vocabulary inductively through extended contextual reading and an ingenious system of marginal notes. Lingua Latina per se Illustrata is also the most popular series for those teachers at both the secondary and collegiate levels who wish to develop Latin conversational skills in the classroom. Familia Romana (the main book of Pars I of the Lingua Latina per se illustrata series) contains thirty-five chapters and describes the life of a Roman family in the 2nd century A.D. It culminates in readings from classical poets and Donatus's Ars Grammatica, the standard Latin school text for a millennium. She leads her student in storytelling exercises. She meets other writers for dinner. She goes swimming in the Ionian Sea with her seatmate from the place. The people she encounters speak volubly about themselves, their fantasies, anxieties, pet theories, regrets, and longings. And through these disclosures, a portrait of the narrator is drawn by contrast, a portrait of a woman learning to face great a great loss. Outline is the first book in a short and yet epic cycle - a masterful trilogy which will be remembered as one of the most significant achievements of our times. 'Outline succeeds powerfully. Among other things, it gets a great variety of human beings down on the page with both immediacy and depth; an elemental pleasure that makes the book as gripping to read as a thriller... A ste...
